Our community is called Maningrida. It's traditional name is Manayiingkarirra and it is in Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. We used to be one tribe, one languge, but now there are lots of different tribes and languges here. We've all got different songs and dances.
In our community we have the Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation, a school, a shop, a clinic, a council, a woman’s centre where they make textiles, a plant nursery with an Aboriginal Ranger, a workshop, an arts centre, a job training centre and a town hall. We also have an oval for football, a basketball court and a swimming pool.
We teach our kids in English and in their own language. They need to know the right name for trees and fish, the sea creatures and land creatures. Knowing culture and ceremony, respecting people, and passing on the knowledge.
